Family Photo of Construction of the Nevada California & Oregon Railway |
Description: |
(Date Approximate) This photo from my grandmothers family history collection; shows what looks like a construction train on the Nevada California & Oregon line. Help via Facebook on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific fan groups suggests the location is Wendel California. My ancestors who worked on railroads were Martin David Rice, and his son Hubil Lumis Rice. It is possible they are both in this photo. |

RUT 611 (Finally!) |
Description: |
The RUT 611 is one of Utah Railways true "road trains" which almost always uses six axle power as it travels from Provo to Ogden. Most of Utah Railways six axle power is still painted in their classic paint scheme, so it has been a goal of mine to catch this train in motion. Finally today my luck came together and I got to catch the 611 with a SD50 on the lead as it powered through Salt Lake City on the old Rio Grande main! |

Small, Lean, and Fast! |
Description: |
South of Castilla and nearing the Thistle landslide location, a BNSF Provo to Lincoln Nebraska train (the H PVOLIN as BNSF calls it, or the QPVLIN as Union Pacific traces it); throttles though a cut in beautiful and soft red rocks. The BNSF attitude of running fast and short trains through Spanish Fork Canyon is reminiscent of the Rio Grandes same methods of getting trains through this route. |

MNPWC At the Yard Portal |
Description: |
This monster train once it settled into North Yard, had one end sticking out on the main on the northern portal, and the head end sticking out on the main on the south end. This would not be a big deal if it was just here for a crew change... but the MNPWC drops off cars and switches a bit in Salt Lake City! Not to mention at the same time on the opposite main was the MWCNP also due to switch a bit in SLC. The switching moves pushed the train even further south down to the North Temple UTA station, and as night fell and we left, it got the signal to pull forward down into Grant Tower to continue its switching moves. These two monster trains probably gave the yard master a headache that night... |

Snowflake |
Description: |
With its clean white exterior, UTA 901 has gained the nickname "Snowflake" from local railfans. A strange twist of irony, as the winter of 2015-16 proved unusually harsh for this snowy engine, when cold temperatures literally froze components of the engine in place, fmrcing the need for sudden emergency repairs. Now, in a 100 degree summer, Snowflake is back at work serving both UTA and the Union Pacific. Here is Snowflake at her usual resting spot%in UPs Fourth South Yard |
